The Rocher de Mutzig (German Mutzigfels , patois Prancey ) is a 1009 m (according to other information 1010 m) high mountain in the Vosges in Alsace , France . It is located about 8 km north of Schirmeck .
The Rocher de Mutzig is next to the better known Donon , which is also 1009 m high, the highest peak in the northern Vosges. The mountain range made up of red sandstone separates the Breuschtal in the south from the Haseltal in the north. In addition to peaks in the west of Narion (999 m), the Noll (990 m) and to Lorraine lying area Grossmann (986 m). To the east of the Rocher de Mutzig is the Katzenberg (903 m), on which the remains of a castle from the 13th century have been preserved. In the saddle between the two mountains stands the Porte de Pierre (door frame) , a sandstone rock weathered in the shape of a double gate. In the south, the double summit of the Langenberg ( La Grande Côte , 831 and 830 m) protrudes into the Breuschtal; On the Vorderen Langenberg there is a prehistoric cult site with several menhirs surrounded by a ring wall , known as the Jardin des Fées (fairy garden) .
Since the forest was damaged by hurricane Lothar in 1999, there has been a view of the Vosges and the Breuschtal from the rugged summit plateau of the Mutzigfelsen. The mountain can be hiked from Urmatt , Lutzelhouse , Oberhaslach and Donon (on the GR long-distance hiking trail 53).
