Tony Sheridan came to Hamburg in 1960 as a member of the group The Jets , which performed in the Kaiserkeller on the Große Freiheit . The members of the Jets returned to England, while Tony Sheridan stayed in Hamburg and appeared as a solo singer in the Top Ten Club on the Reeperbahn . He was accompanied there by various bands, for example Gerry & the Pacemakers and the Beatles . The Beatles not only supported Tony Sheridan on stage, they also lived together for months and spent much of their limited free time together.

From April 1 to July 1, 1961, the Beatles had an engagement in the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, where they made 92 appearances. In early May 1961, the German singer Tommy Kent visited the Top Ten Club and was so impressed by Tony Sheridan's and The Beatles' performances that he convinced Bert Kaempfert to visit the club as well, which he did with his wife and Tommy Kent the following day did and first got in touch with Tony Sheridan and the Beatles. Further visits followed and in June 1961 Kaempfert and his sound engineer Karl Hinze discussed the conditions for future recordings with Sheridan and the Beatles in the Top Ten Club .

Sheridan and the Beatles played on the stage of the Top Ten Club until after 3 a.m. on June 22, 1961. When Bert Kaempfert, as agreed, picked up Tony Sheridan and the Beatles at 8 a.m. in front of the Great Freedom, they were still asleep.

Friedrich-Ebert-Halle

The first recordings were made on June 22nd and 23rd, 1961 with an improvised recording studio on the stage of the auditorium of the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Hamburg-Harburg . The following songs were recorded with a portable two-track tape recorder, Bert Kaempfert was in charge of production and Karl Hinze was the sound engineer:

  1. My Bonnie (announcement in German)
  2. My Bonnie (My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean)
  3. The Saints (When the Saints Go Marching In)
  4. Why (Can't You Love Again)
  5. Nobody's Child
  6. Take Out Some Insurance on Me

The Beatles also recorded two songs without Sheridan:

  1. Cry for a Shadow (instrumental song)
  2. Ain't She Sweet (vocals by John Lennon)

In some sources it is mentioned that further recordings were made on June 24, 1961 in the Rahlstedt studio in Hamburg. However, since the studio was not completed until the end of February 1962, this date is excluded. Each of the four Beatles received 175 DM for each of the two studio days . On July 2, 1961, the Beatles left Germany and did not return to Hamburg until the Star Club opened on April 13, 1962.

Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers - My Bonnie

On October 23, 1961, the single My Bonnie / The Saints was published by Polydor (catalog number NH 24673), under the artist name (label print) "Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers". My Bonnie has an intro in German and only Tony Sheridan was mentioned on the record sleeve. Another version appeared in Germany in January 1962, also by Polydor (with the same catalog number). It contains an English intro. This version appeared in the UK on January 1, 1962 (catalog number Polydor NH 66833) and in the United States on April 23, 1962 (catalog number DECCA 31382). It reached number 48 in the UK, 26th in the US and 32nd in Germany. The British version lists "Tony Sheridan & The Beatles" as the artist on the label, so the Beatles were first mentioned as an artist on a record here.

At the end of October / beginning of November Brian Epstein became aware of the Beatles due to the single My Bonnie and visited them for the first time on November 9, 1961 in the Cavern Club . Further meetings followed until he officially became the manager of the Beatles in late January 1962.

On December 21, 1961 Tony Sheridan took another ten songs for his album My Bonnie under the production direction of Bert Kaempfert, but without the Beatles on. The recordings took place in the great hall of the music hall in Hamburg. The following songs were recorded:

  1. Skinny Minnie
  2. Whole Lotta Shakin 'Goin On
  3. I know baby
  4. You Are My Sunshine
  5. Ready teddy
  6. Hallelujah, I Love Her So
  7. Let's twist again
  8. Sweet Georgia Brown

The decision was made to publish the ten songs recorded on December 21 and the two songs with the Beatles, My Bonnie and The Saints, on the album. The master tape for the album, entitled My Bonnie , was completed on March 26, 1962 and was released in April 1962 in a mono (catalog number: Polydor LPHM 46612) and stereo version (catalog number: Polydor SLPHM 237112).

The single You Are My Sunshine / Swanee River (catalog number: Polydor 24 849 NH) was released from the album My Bonnie .

In April 1962, the EP Mister Twist (catalog number 21914) was released in France , which for the first time contains the following four songs with the Beatles: When the Saints / Cry for a Shadow / My Bonnie / Why .

In December 1963 the album My Bonnie was re-released with a new cover design under the title Let's Do the Madison, Twist, Locomotion, Slop, Hully Gully, Monkey . For the 25th anniversary in 1986, the album My Bonnie was published again in a reprint true to the original.

The eight songs of the Sheridan / Beatles recordings were published in April 1964 on the compilation album The Beatles' First in Germany.
