My Name Is Bruce is an American comedy film directed by Bruce Campbell in which he also plays the lead role. The independent film was released in 2007 and is peppered with many insider gags.
action
Jeff, an absolute Bruce Campbell fan, drives his buddy to an old Chinese cemetery outside the small mining town of Gold Lick, Oregon . They want to 'put one away' there and have arranged to meet two girls. Jeff removes a magical amulet and releases Guan-Di, a Chinese demon . Guan-Di kills his companions, but Jeff escapes. He decides to call his great hero Bruce Campbell, who should kill the demon.
Bruce Campbell is currently shooting the B-movie Cavealien 2 and is at an absolute career low . His wife has left him and lives with his manager and the media reports that he has not made a film in years. Jeff, who he thinks is someone who wants to sell him an exposé , is initially rejected. However, Jeff manages to overpower Bruce and bring him to Gold Lick.
Once there, Bruce thinks everything is a big birthday surprise and plays along. At a town hall meeting, he gets the background explained: Guan Di, the protector of the Chinese dead and tofu, has returned to avenge the deaths of 100 Chinese miners. He will not rest until the last descendant of the mine owners at that time is dead. This is tragic because the whole church is based on incest . Bruce, visibly bored, then has fun in a bar and is courted. He hooks up with Jeff's mother, Kelly, and is then called in when night falls. When he realizes that the demon is real, he runs away and returns to his trailer, abandoning all the residents who helped him hunt.
When his manager gives him a prostitute for his birthday, he receives a call from Jeff. Bruce's cowardly escape showed him that he, as the person in charge, must have the courage to fight the demon on his own. Bruce's guilty conscience plagues him and he lets the prostitute drive him back to Gold Lick. Once there, Jeff has already gone into battle. His mother is in the process of burning all of Bruce's collected merchandise. They quickly rush to the old cemetery and support him. They find out that, as the protector of tofu, Guan-Di spares anyone who carries this food with them. Bruce lures the demon into the mine and sets up a cardboard stand of himself there. However, the lure is not enough and Bruce decides to sacrifice himself. He fights the demon while Jeff and Kelly set off dynamite. Bruce survives the explosion and puts the amulet back on. However, the demon returns and kills all three ...
Bruce stops the screening of his new film and pleads for a different ending. A cheesy happy ending is shown, then the demon strikes again.
background
The script for My Name Is Bruce came about when Mark Verheiden got his hands on a comic book called The Adventures of Alan Ladd from DC Comics . In this comic, the "real" Alan Ladd experienced the adventures of his film alter egos. Verheiden quickly had Bruce Campbell as the lead actor in mind, who made his first Timecop project possible.
My Name Is Bruce was created as a partnership between Image Entertainment, Dark Horse Comics , screenwriter Mark Verheiden, and Bruce Campbell. The budget amounted to 1.5 million US dollars . Filming took place in Medford , Oregon. The cooperation was based on a partnership with the independent special effects company Landmine Entertainment , which is based in Medford. Most of the locations were used several times, so the club building of the Elk Club served as a town hall, gun shop and pub. Bruce Campbell's property was used for the exterior scenes of the city and the cemetery. The city was built out of wood especially for the film.
Guest stars included Ted Raimi (in three roles), Ellen Sandweiss ( Dance of the Devils ), Danny Hicks ( Dance of the Devils II - Now there's more dancing ) and Tim Quill ( Army of Darkness ). In other cameos are Sam Raimi , director of the Evil Dead series, and Robert Tapert to see. Both are very good friends of Campbell.
The film contains numerous allusions to Bruce Campbell's previous film career. In particular, the numerous B-movies are mentioned. His two books If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor and Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way is mentioned several times throughout the film.
Reviews
Overall, the film was rated rather mediocre. Many critics praised the idea of the film, but the result fell short of the high expectations (after films like Bubba Ho-Tep and Army of Darkness).
"If the normal viewer accepts a certain amount of trash ," My Name is Bruce "is a decent comedy with an ingenious leading actor, but whose gag hit rate could have been a bit higher. For Bruce Campbell fans, however, a visit to the cinema is a must, which is why there can only be one conclusion for them: Hail to the king! "
