The next Breck water tower

The water tower Nächstebreck is currently out of service befindlicher water tower on the North Downs of bergischen city Wuppertal - Nächstebreck in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The tower is located in the extreme northeast of the city of Wuppertal near the city limits of Sprockhövel in the Oberbarmen district (residential area Nachbarebreck-Ost ) on Haßlinghauser Strasse . It is located near the motorway junction Wuppertal-Nord , where the three federal motorways A 1 , A 43 and A 46 meet, or the motorway junction Wuppertal-Oberbarmen . The tower stands at a height of about 310 meters above sea level .

Origin and description

The almost round tower was built in concrete in 1974/1975. The height is 53.15 meters (excluding antennas) and is a landmark that can be seen from afar and shapes the silhouette of the northern Wuppertal urban area. The tower shaft has a diameter of a good 5 m, that of the water tank is 28.70 m. It has a total capacity of 1540 m³ and consists of two different sized chambers (so-called "cups") with a capacity of 1250 m³ and 290 m³ respectively. In the event that maintenance work is carried out on one chamber, the other chamber is still available for the water supply.

When the tower was built, the water tank was created on the ground and then by a so-called "pulling lifting", i.e. H. pulled up on the tower shaft by means of a crane.

It is practically identical in origin and construction to the Lichtscheider water tower , which was built in 1975 on the Lichtscheid , the highest elevation of the southern heights in Wuppertal and is easily confused with it. Only the lower tower shaft shows - in contrast to the twin tower on Lichtscheid - a clear reinforcement.

use

The water tower was in operation until the beginning of 2013 and (along with other systems in the water supply network) ensured the Wuppertal drinking water supply, especially in the northeast of the Barmen district . It is maintained by the Wuppertal municipal utility , which is also responsible for the water supply and disposal network in Wuppertal. The water came primarily from the Herbringhauser dam and is treated in the local waterworks as well as from the Dhünntalsperre .

At the beginning of 2013, the water tower was temporarily decommissioned as it was in need of renovation. A decision as to whether a renovation will take place is still pending on the part of the Wuppertal municipal utility.
