The NASCAR - Winston Cup 1976 began on January 18 with the Daytona 500 . Champion was Cale Yarborough with 4,644 points ahead of Richard Petty . The season was accompanied by two clashes, one involving Richard Petty and David Pearson and also Dale Earnhardt and Dick Brooks at the Atlanta International Raceway . The season earned Cale Yarborough his first Winston Cup trophy. A female driver also started this year: Janet Guthrie . She finished 15th at the World 600 . The rank of first place changed a total of eight times among four drivers. David Pearson took ten wins in 22 races (Yarborough only nine, but with 30 races).
