NGC 1999 is a dusty, 1500 light-years distant, reflection nebula in the constellation Orion . Because of the shape of the cloud, it is also known as the Keyhole Nebula . The gas is illuminated by the variable star V380 Orionis and thus also makes the dust structures visible. The nebula is located near the well-known Orion Nebula .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on October 5, 1785 .
