NGC 1981 is the name of an open star cluster in the constellation Orion . For the naked eye it forms the northernmost point in the sword of the sky hunter Orion. NGC  1981 has an angular extent of about 28 'and an apparent magnitude of 4.2 mag.

The cluster has only a few, widely spaced, but bright stars on an area with a diameter of 25 arc minutes and belongs to subgroup c of the Orion-OB1 association . The distance is about 1,300 light years and the age is estimated to be five to ten million years.

The star cluster was discovered on January 4, 1827 by the astronomer John Herschel .
