NGC 1977 designates an H II region and the young, in this star-forming region located open clusters . NGC  1977 is located in the constellation Orion, immediately north of the Orion Nebula , and is part of the Orion A molecular cloud at a distance of about 500 parsecs .

The NGC entries NGC 1973 and NGC 1975 denote parts of NGC 1977. They go back to observations made by Heinrich d'Arrest on December 16, 1862 and October 3, 1864, respectively.
