NGC 1974 is an open star cluster and emission nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation Swordfish . NGC 1974 has an angular extent of 1.7 ′ and an apparent magnitude of 9 mag. The star cluster was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826 and was included in the New General Catalog as NGC in 1974. The astronomer John Herschel also observed this object on January 2, 1837, which led to the entry NGC 1991 .
