history

The plain was already an early settlement area of the Mansaka ethnic group, who settled along a strip that extended from the communities of Mawab to the Baranggay Bankerohan in Montevista. The original location of the Baranggay of Nabunturan was along today's provincial road between Libasan and Saosao, about 4 km from today's community center.

After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the new community served as a hiding place for guerrillas and some remaining US units. However, during the Japanese occupation, the fighters and many civilians fled Nabunturan and the place became a base of the Japanese Kampetai garrison.

After the war, American troops landed in Davao City in 1945 and the Philippine Civil Assistance Unit (PCAU) set up a civil government for Compostela in the area of Nabunturan, as the place is an access point to and from Davao City. During the following years, Nabunturan became a trading center and control center for various government services. For this reason, the need soon arose to convert the place into an independent municipality. A wish that was ultimately also supported by high-ranking politicians.

On July 23, 1957, Republic Act No. 2038 separated Nabunturans from its mother parish, Compostela, and made it an independent parish.

On January 30, 1998, President Fidel Ramos signed the law that made Davao de Oro the 79th province of the country, Republic Act No. 8740. In this context, the Nabunturan municipality was also given the headquarters of the provincial government.
