Naftali Tamir (born December 11, 1944 in Ramat Gan ) is an Israeli diplomat .

From 1964 to 1966 Tamir did his military service in the Israeli armed forces . He then studied political science and English literature at Bar-Ilan University from 1966 to 1970 , where he received a Bachelor of Arts . Tamir now continued his studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . He studied international relations and international law from 1970 to 1974 and received a Master of Social Science with distinction (Summa Cum Laude).

In 1970 Tamir began working for the Israeli Foreign Ministry. During his further career he was, among other 1977-1980 First Secretary of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC , 1984-1988 Counselor at the Israeli Embassy in Tokyo , and from 1994 to 1999 Deputy Head of the Israeli Mission to the European Union in Brussels . In 1999 he became chargé d'affaires at the Israeli embassy in Helsinki . Later in the year he was appointed Israeli ambassador to Finland . He held this post until 2000. In 2002 Tamir was a member of the Israeli delegation to the 57th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City .

In 2004 he became Ambassador to Australia with simultaneous accreditation as a non-resident ambassador to New Zealand , Fiji and Papua New Guinea . In October 2006, Tamir was dismissed because of remarks about Asians and was represented by Chargé d'affaires Irit Lillian until a new ambassador arrived in Australia .

In 2008 Tamir represented Israel at the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA). Since November 2010 he has been charge officer (ad interim) at the Israeli embassy in Latvia , where he is also accredited in Lithuania .

In addition to Hebrew , Tamir also speaks English and French . He is married and has two children.
