Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal (born March 15, 1946 in New York City as Naomi Achs ) is an American screenwriter and film producer , and the mother of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal .

Life

Naomi Achs was the daughter of Samuel Achs and Dr. Ruth Silbowitz was born into a Jewish family. In 1966 she received her bachelor's degree in English from Barnard College , after which she studied developmental psychology at Columbia University . In 1968 she led the media campaign in the presidential campaign of the Democrat Eugene McCarthy . She later stated that political interest and her dissatisfaction with American society led her to write; an agitprop idea that the best way to reach people with thoughts is through their feelings.

Then she took the opportunity to work with the organization Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop ) in the production of various educational children's television programs such as The Electric Company and Sesame Street . She worked with many scriptwriters, but didn't dare to write herself until a friend at the PBS show Visions gave her the opportunity to do so. At the time, Gyllenhaal was pregnant with her daughter, Maggie, and the new perspective was welcome.

After her first produced screenplay, Love is Just an Illusion , was published in 1986 , it was the subsequent film drama The Escape into Unknown , which was directed by Sidney Lumet , with which she caused a sensation. It was in 1989 with a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Screenplay award and received in 1989 an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay .

Foner Gyllenhaal was initially married to the historian Eric Foner . In 1977 she married the director Stephen Gyllenhaal , with whom she has two children, the two actors Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal . This marriage ended in divorce in 2009.
