Shri Narhar Vishnu "Kakasaheb" Gadgil (* 10. January 1896 in Malhagarh , Madhya Bharat , now Madhya Pradesh ; † 12. January 1966 in Pune , Maharashtra ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), a member of the Lok Sabha was and between 1947 and 1952 held various ministerial posts in Nehru's first cabinet . He also served as governor of Punjab between 1958 and 1962 .

Life

Gadgil, son of Shri Vishnu Narayan Gadgil, completed his education at Aryan High School in Bombay and at the NM Vidyala School in Poona . He then completed an undergraduate degree at Baroda College in Baroda and at Fergusson College in Poona, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a law degree at the Government Law School in Bombay with a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.). He began his political engagement in the mid-1920s and was initially secretary of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Maharashtra from 1925 to 1926 and was a member of the party presidency AICC (All India Congress Committee) since 1925 . He was also a member and vice-president of the Poona City Council between 1930 and 1931, President of the INC Party Committee in Maharashtra, a member of the Central Paying Commission and from 1946 to 1947 a member of the Penitentiary Reform Committee of the British Indian Government .

After independence from the United Kingdom Gadgil was on August 15, 1947 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his first cabinet appointed and held there until 15 April 1952, the Office of the Minister of Public Works. He was also Minister for Mining and Energy between August 15, 1947 and 1950, Minister of Commerce for a short time in 1948 and, most recently, Minister for Production and Supply from April 6, 1950 to April 15, 1952. After the constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950, he was elected member of the Lok Sabha in the first elections in 1952 and represented the constituency of Bombay-Poona Central in the first election period until 1957 .

On September 15, 1958, Gadgil Chandeshwar Prasad Narayan Singh succeeded as governor of Punjab and held this office until September 30, 1962, whereupon Pattom A. Thanu Pillai on October 1, 1962 was his successor.

His marriage to Shrimati Ansuya Gadgil in 1948 resulted in two sons and six daughters, including Vithal Narhar Gadgil , who was a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and was Minister of State in several governments.
