Narus is the world's largest manufacturer of mass surveillance technology (English mass surveillance ). The Boeing subsidiary develops and sells, among other things, real-time analytics software for networks for signals intelligence applications ( enterprise class spyware ). The company hit the media in 2004 when it became known that a supercomputer system, the NarusInsight , was monitoring all data in near real time for the National Security Agency (NSA) on an Internet backbone in San Francisco . The current product (2013) Narus nSystem is supposed to provide a complete solution including a multidimensional database, compression of large amounts of data and a forensic portal.

history

In 1997 the company was initiated by an Israeli team led by Ori Cohen, as Vice President for Economic Development and Technology Research of the video networking company VDONet and Stas Khirman in Israel. Both have been working for Deutsche Telekom AG since March 2013 .

It has been known since 2004 that Narus was a supplier to the US secret service, when former director of the NSA William P. Crowell was appointed to the board of directors at Narus.

Narus has been a subsidiary of the US armaments and aircraft manufacturer Boeing since 2010.

Applications

Narus devices are used for the global Echelon communications interception system operated by the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada - the so-called Five Eyes Group .

Narus was best known for developing NarusInsight , a supercomputer system that was installed on AT & T's Internet backbone in San Francisco. In 2006 there was a legal battle between the Electronic Frontier Foundation and AT&T, partly triggered by the former AT&T technician and later NSA whistleblower Mark Klein . Klein and the Electronic Frontier Foundation were able to prove that AT&T allowed the NSA to use Narus technology to route all telephone calls and IP data directly to the backbones. According to Klein, the NSA installed a Narus STA 6400 eavesdropping interface in a secret room, Room 641A , in the AT&T data center in San Francisco . Similar systems had already been installed in Seattle , San José , Los Angeles and San Diego .

Narus is the manufacturer of the technology for the surveillance program PRISM of the NSA, which was made famous by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in the wake of the surveillance scandal in 2013 .

The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) to according to research by the German magazine, this fact bought through the "Society for Technical Solutions" (GTS) based in Frankfurt the art Narus components. Shortly after the company was founded in 2007, GTS was therefore the exclusive sales partner of Narus, from whom the BND is said to have bought the technology in 2008. As Andy Müller-Maguhn , member of the Chaos Computer Club and former director of ICANN explained in the television show, Narus does not offer any small surveillance solutions. Instead, the surveillance technology developed here can be used to record the entire communication of a specific network or state. The federal government responded to a small inquiry in September 2013 : "The federal security authorities do not use any products from Narus or Polygon."
