National Consultative Council (East Timor)

The National Consultative Council NCC took over the role of the population in East Timor during the interim administration of the United Nations (UNTAET).

history

In 1999, the 25-year occupation ended and the United Nations took over responsibility for the territory. On November 17, 1999, Sérgio Vieira de Mello took over as the new UN special envoy in Dili, his role as interim administrator of East Timor. In October he had already appointed the 15 members of the NCC who were to take on the role of parliament. The official establishment was on December 2nd, 1999 by the UNTAET Regulation No. 1999/2 completed.

On July 12, 2000, the NCC set up a transitional cabinet . Even if the selection of the East Timorese members was de jure Mello, he left this to Xanana Gusmão .

On June 21, 2000, UNTAET and the CNR agreed to reorganize the NCC. The 36-member National Council met on October 23, 2000 and replaced the NCC.

Members

Xanana Gusmão, President of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT), became the spokesman for the NCC. The NCC included seven representatives from the CNRT, three representatives from political parties outside the CNRT, and one representative from the Catholic Church in East Timor . There were also Sérgio Vieira de Mello and three other UNTAET members. According to the statute. The real list looked different.
