The Vilsandi National Park is located in western Estonia on the west coast of the Baltic Sea island Saaremaa .

The Vilsandi National Park was established on September 21, 1971. A nature reserve had existed there since 1957, and a bird reserve since 1910. Administratively, the area belongs to the Saaremaa rural community .
The area of the Vilsandi National Park is 180 km² today, of which 105 km² is marine area. It includes the region around the island of Vilsandi , the bays Atla, Kihelkonna and Kuusnõmme as well as the surrounding marine world with around 160 protected islands and islets. The waters are largely ice-free in winter.
The island of Vilsandi is the only inhabited island in the national park. There is also a biological station on it with overnight accommodation for scientists and tourists.
fauna
The bird life in the national park is particularly impressive. Over 250 different species are registered. 112 species of birds nest in the area. The eider is the most widespread (approx. 4000 specimens). The national park is also a habitat for barnacle geese , black- topped gulls , herring gulls and terns .
Islands
Characteristic for the national park is the wealth of untouched islands on which the sea birds can live and nest undisturbed.
