The German Navy Federation e. V. (DMB) is an umbrella organization of over 300 local associations, clubs and naval comradeships , in which active and above all former members of the navy are organized. The Navy Federation has 16 regional associations. Its seat is in Laboe near Kiel .

Purpose and goals

The DMB has set itself the task of promoting maritime awareness in Germany. The DMB is politically and ideologically independent. The Laboe Marine Memorial , an international memorial for peace, is owned and maintained by the DMB. He also maintains the museum ship U 995 , which is located at the memorial . A sub-organization of the Navy Association supports youth work, the Navy Regatta Association promotes water sports . At the international level, the DMB is a member of the International Maritime Confederation IMC (International Maritime Federation).

In 2012, the DMB founded the German Maritime Academy (DMA) as a non-profit foundation . The DMA is the educational institution of the German Navy Federation and aims to promote knowledge about the importance of the sea, shipping , the maritime economy and maritime policy.

history

On March 14, 1891, the “Bund Deutscher Marinevereine” was constituted as a forerunner in Kiel. Only active and former naval members of all ranks could become members. The focus was on maintaining camaraderie, exchanging ideas about what we shared and welfare institutions for the members. In 1926, the youth association in the German Navy Association was founded. V. founded. After the end of the First World War , the idea arose to erect a memorial for the fallen marines. In 1936 the Naval Memorial in Laboe was inaugurated. In the era of National Socialism of the Navy League lost its independence, it was on March 4, 1935 into line . The name new was National Socialist German Marine-Bund e. V. (NSDMB) and the federal government was subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy . The seat of the federal government was Bremen. The NSDMB published the German marine newspaper. The aim of the Navy Federation during the National Socialist era was to strengthen the National Socialist expansionist drive, which becomes clear in the objective of “spreading and preserving belief in the necessity of German sea sailing and the will to sea sailing”.

On December 20, 1952, the Verein Deutscher Marinebund e. V. newly founded as the umbrella organization for all naval associations and fellowships in Wilhelmshaven. Non-naval members could now also be accepted as members if they felt committed to the maritime idea.
