With nature experience space , even Naturerlebnisraum or Naturerlebnisraum , a special form of natural design is schoolyards , kindergartens and playgrounds designated, the early 2000s was introduced through publications. This means the planning, construction and maintenance of a nature experience space together with the users according to the so-called "Dillinger model" of user participation .

history

The planning phase of a nature experience space usually includes the construction of a working model by the children and adults involved, who then model and design the terrain themselves in the implementation phase in project days or project weeks. This is followed by maintenance, with the users also being involved over the years.

Nature experience rooms have the following features, among others: User participation takes place according to the "Dillinger model"; the landscape itself is a “play device”, with great ups and downs inviting movement and play; and classic, commercially available play equipment is more of an exception. The buildings are built according to the principles and guidelines of natural horticulture , such as those presented by the specialist companies for near-natural greenery , and where mainly regional building materials are used. The soils are usually weed-free in order to enable species-rich and diverse sustainable planting and sowing .

The planting is done with native plants ; The relevant publications of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) apply as guidelines for this . The flora is very species-rich and varied, there are not only bushes and lawns as usual with conventional systems, but also sowing with annual and biennial plants , flower beds in all locations, wild flower borders, flower meadows , flower gravel lawns , flower herbs lawn as well as bulbs and perennials - and woody plantings .

The prerequisite for the long-term positive development of nature experience spaces is sustainable, natural care that is based on the principles of sustainability . The aim is "the introduction of permanently positive, self-renewing and sustaining development and change processes in the designed, near-natural outdoor space" .

The first project realized according to these principles was the 1995 built nature adventure schoolyard in Lauingen . The approach of the “Dillinger Model” was then transferred for the first time to nature adventure kindergartens and nature adventure playgrounds in 2000 .

The "Dillinger Model"

The implementation method “Dillinger Modell” developed at the Bavarian Academy for Teacher Training and Personnel Management in Dillingen provides for an evaluation and further planning of the proposals developed and built by the children as a working model for “their” nature experience space according to four different focal points:

  • “Play and movement” , such as: a diverse hilly landscape with paths, squares, niches and species-rich planting; Water play area; Stream or natural play pond; Stepping stones and jumping stones in the water; Sand slush terrain; Balancing, climbing and jumping trees; Climbing trunks; Tree houses; Climbing rock wall; as well as jumping stones or palisades.
  • "Nature experience and species protection" , such as: bridges made of logs and rocks; Rock boulders; Crawl tunnel; Stone walls; Dry slopes, as herbaceous beds or flower meadows; Flower beds; Flower meadows and lawns; Wild fruit for harvest; Arid locations with wildflowers and small trees; as well as various hedges, small trees and play bushes.
  • “Peace and communication” , such as: Natural resting places and seating made of wood or stone; Benches and tables; Arena with seating steps; Willow structures like mazes and tippis; as well as meeting points.
  • "Art and Creativity" such as: mosaic objects; colorful concrete sculptures; Wood art; as well as metal art.

The Academy for Teacher Training and Personnel Management in Dillingen has long been concerned with the creative design of schoolyards and has also developed an implementation methodology and various materials for teachers and parents.

practice

The construction of nature experience rooms is in the majority of cases viewed as more cost-effective than that of conventional systems, whereby nature experience rooms are often more creative, stimulating, closer to nature and more "exciting" for children. According to previous experience, their maintenance is also inexpensive. In addition, they promote the intellectual, motor and emotional development and the corresponding abilities of children much better than conventional schoolyards, kindergartens or playgrounds.

The non-profit association Naturgarten e. V. promotes and supports the creation of nature experience spaces, for example through information and advice. In addition, he advocates the establishment of a network of specially trained specialist advisors who have both sufficient structural and technical competence for planning and realizing such systems according to the principles and guidelines of natural horticulture, as well as the necessary educational skills for intensive participation by the adult and especially underage users. The association offers appropriate advanced training and education in this area.
