history

Following the example of the Swiss Association for Natural Garden (VNG) took place in 1990 in Munich , the foundation of the German natural garden e. V. The founders include gardeners , biologists , garden designers and landscape architects who are convinced of the natural garden idea .

In 2020 the non-profit association will have around 3,000 members from Germany and other European countries. The range of members includes experts in the field of horticulture and landscaping as well as private nature garden lovers, clubs, schools and other organizations. His work is supported by volunteers and regional groups of the association.

The association is led by five board members. The coordination and administration of members, information and internet presence is carried out by the federal office in Bonn.

Since 1991, the association has organized the natural garden days for 3–4 days every year with speakers from home and abroad. Further events of the association are guided tours, training courses and excursions .

The association maintains contacts with related European organizations, such as the Swiss VNG or the Dutch association Stichting Oase , and sometimes works with them. The association is a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring .

Goals of the association

The association works on a dense network for gardens, public green, landscape and people with native plants as the basis of life for native animals.

The most important goals are to promote near-natural garden and landscape design, to promote and preserve the native flora and fauna and their habitats, to adhere to ecological working methods in gardening and landscape design and in the production of seeds and plants, to exchange information and make suggestions for your own To give projects and to share experiences with like-minded people.

Public effect

The association forms a network for activities close to nature and has achieved national political importance. He sees himself as a point of contact in technical, scientific and cultural matters relating to the natural garden.

In 2019, the Naturgarten eV designed a display area at the Federal Garden Show 2019 in Heilbronn Template: future / in 5 years.

Technically, it forms the natural counterpart to the Federal Association of Horticulture and Landscaping and sets standards for natural gardening and landscaping with the guidelines of its specialist companies for natural greenery . The association promotes new approaches to garden and landscape architecture; For example, there is a cooperation with the organic cultivation association Bioland for the distribution of organically grown, native wild perennials on the garden market. In addition, since 1993, the association has been committed to the creation of nature experience areas , such as natural play areas for children and young people across Germany . He runs advanced training courses, seminars and conferences through the “Naturgarten Academy” (Naturgarten Days 2019 with 250 participants in the DJH-Heidelberg, NG “intensive” with over 100 participants in Grünberg / Hessen).

30 regional groups have formed nationwide to accompany local campaigns, state garden shows, etc.

The association is scientifically committed to the development of new construction technology and sowing methods, such as weed-free sowing and planting, flower meadows , flower-gravel lawns and greening of gabions (wire gravel baskets ).

He works with other institutions and carried out a flower meadow test from 1997 to 2000 together with the Saxon State Institute for Agriculture in Dresden- Pillnitz. In 2007 he cooperated with the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) on a study on the natural greening of industrial and commercial areas based on the model of the Swiss Foundation for Nature and Economy . The association works to ensure that sustainable plantings and seeds are created with the help of indigenous species that will last for long periods of time.

In the cultural field, the association is involved in suitable projects. From 1996 to 1998 he was involved in the project "The Endangered Meadows of Europe" of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany (KAH) in Bonn . Under the direction of the artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison , various types of meadow were laid out on the roof gardens of the KAH.
