history

The square was given its current name on June 1, 1910 , previously it was created according to the development plan as an unnamed and undeveloped square at the intersection of Reinickendorfer / Liebenwalder and Schulstrasse. The rapidly increasing population in Berlin at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries led to intensive residential development, in what was then the Wedding area , primarily through Bauverein Aktiengesellschaft Reinickendorfer Straße. In the process, unfavorably cut plots were left free in intersection areas. A garden-like design of the area only took place after the Second World War . The place was and is not a postal address.

Location and special features

The triangular square opening to the north is bordered to the southwest by Reinickendorfer Strasse and southeast by Schulstrasse. The “Haus der Jugend” building block is located on the imaginary eastern extension of Liebenwalder Strasse, which at the beginning also ran along here. The building complex on the square with the neighboring “Café Naumi” divides the area into a north and a south area. The House of Youth , consisting of the child and youth office, the center of youth law, the Kiez craftsmen from KIDS e. V. as well as the in-house “Café klar”, has existed here since 1951. The building has the address Reinickendorfer Straße 55.

In this quarter around Nauener Platz there was a Salvation Army maternity hospital for unmarried mothers around 1900 on the site of a former skin tuberculosis clinic .

Redesign at the beginning of the 21st century

Between 2006 and 2009 the concept "Nauener Platz - Redesign for young and old" was implemented. With the help of funding from the Senate and on behalf of the Central District Office, generous open spaces were created with new, cross-generational play and recreation elements, innovative sound and light elements. Fittkau Metallbau und Kunstschmiede built the illuminated handrails and the "light tree" now on the square . Particularly noteworthy are a noise-reducing gabion wall , a promenade with a play beach, the adjacent meadow with lawn waves, the newly designed ball game areas and the well-tended flower beds. In connection with the redesign, in the details of which numerous suggestions from residents were incorporated, a voluntary initiative “Nauener Neu!” Was founded. Since its completion, this has been supported by the professional Pankstrasse space management.

Surroundings

There are two memorial plaques in the area around the square: On the one hand, the name “Jerusalem Library” was given to the Weddinger City Library in 1976 (location Schulstrasse 99/100), and on the other hand, the resistance fighter Otto Lemm , who lived at Oudenarder Strasse 28 lived, was murdered in July 1944 and found his final resting place together with other victims of National Socialism in the Seestrasse urn cemetery .
