Fittkau Metallgestaltung ( proper spelling fittkau metallgestaltung ) is an artisan company based in the Berlin district of Pankow , suburb of Malchow . It now operates worldwide.
Company history
1925-2001
In 1925, a locksmith and family members founded a craft business on the site of Heinersdorfer Strasse 9 in what was then the Berlin-Weißensee district . The orders for Berlin grew quickly in connection with the large community that had emerged, and with it the number of employees. After moving to vacant premises in the Ruthenbergschen Gewerbehöfe , also in Weißensee (since 2001 district of Berlin-Weißensee ) with an expansion of the workshop area, the company remained active there until the end of the Second World War . After a short interim use of the workshops by the Soviet occupying forces , there were new orders for the forge, especially for the reconstruction of the heavily destroyed German capital. The small craft business was able to start over and remained privately owned until 1957. In 1972 it was nationalized and renamed VEB Kunstschmiede Berlin (occasionally also VEB Kunstschmiede Weißensee ). His work found its way into the rebuilt Nikolaiviertel as well as the restoration of Wilhelminian style houses in the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg district around Kollwitzplatz. After the reunification of Germany , the company was re- privatized .
In this company, Stefan Fittkau, who had been trained here in the 1980s, became managing director in 1997 and was primarily responsible for ongoing orders. The resulting need to expand the workshops was not possible on the traditional commercial yards in Weißensee. Like-minded medium-sized companies came together to develop an industrial wasteland with almost 50,000 square meters of usable space together and with funding. The new Darßer Bogen business park is located between Bitburger Straße, Piesporter Straße and Darßer Straße and borders directly on the Berlin-Weißensee district . In recognition of the initiative, the district administration had a plaque put up in 2000 (see picture).
At the same time, Fittkau tried to take over the company, which he finally succeeded in after lengthy negotiations with the descendants of the company founder.
Name changes
On January 1, 2002, Stefan Fittkau became the sole owner of the business and renamed the company fittkau metallbau + kunstschmiede GmbH .
As of January 2020, the company was renamed again to fittkau metallgestaltung gmbh .
Location and business areas
A modern two-storey production hall, which was officially inaugurated in 1998, was built on the premises of around 2500 square meters. The main entrance and the office are in Darßer Bogen 1.
The company is divided into the areas of bronze construction and special constructions . In the former, projects were and will be realized together with artists. As special constructions, the company designs handrails, staircases, lights or facade decorations adapted to each specific object. Historical objects are also being restored. The order breakdown is given as follows: around 10 percent restoration, 10 percent new products and around 80 percent metalwork in the decorative area (as of spring 2013).
Special projects
Business is carried out worldwide, with a focus on Western Europe, North America, Russia and Asia. At the end of 2012, the company was involved in the construction of a new airport in Doha , the capital of Qatar ( New Doha International Airport ). The company manufactured a large stainless steel and glass spiral staircase and several hundred square meters of wall cladding together with the Lindner company from Arnstorf in the Free State of Bavaria.
In addition, aluminum frames for solar kiosks are manufactured. They were created in cooperation with Solarkiosk GmbH , the Berlin architects Graft , with the RLI Institute, founded and named after Reiner Lemoine , and the Berlin University of Technology and Economics (HTW). With the lockable and mobile metal container and the solar collectors on the roof, a local power supply for lighting, mobile phones or food freshness is possible in sunny areas without their own energy sources. The prototype was set up in Ethiopia on Lake Langano in September 2012 . A second container followed in Kenya in spring 2013 .
Awards
In 2006, Fittkau Metallbau received the Oskar Patzelt Foundation's large medium- sized enterprise award . The magazine M&T Metallhandwerk / Metallbaupraxis has been awarding the M&T Metallbaupreis since 2011 . This went to the Fittkau company in 2012 in the metal design category . The jury liked the columbarium in a former Catholic church, now the Liebfrauen Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Dortmund.
