The Hamad International Airport ( IATA code : DOH , ICAO code : OTHH ) is the international airport in Doha , capital of Qatar . It replaces the previous Doha International Airport , which was closed in May 2014. Originally called New Doha International Airport at that time, it was supposed to open in 2009. After a series of delays, Hamad International Airport opened on April 30, 2014 with a first Qatar Airways flight from the old to the new airport. Full flight operations began on May 27, 2014.

history

Since the previous Doha International Airport had reached its capacity limits, construction of the Hamad International Airport began in 2006, which went into operation at the end of April 2014, around five kilometers to the east. The opening was planned for April 1, 2013. The planned official opening date was originally supposed to be the national holiday on December 18, 2012. However, shortly before the opening ceremony, the commissioning was postponed for the fourth time.

The airport was gradually put into operation from April 1, 2014. The first airlines were Air Arabia , Air India Express , Biman Bangladesh Airlines , flydubai , Iran Air , Nepal Airlines , Pakistan International Airlines , RAK Airways , Syrian Arab Airlines and Yemenia . Initially, only one runway and one terminal area (Concourse B) were operated. Airlines that offer their passengers a lounge stayed at the old airport until its completion.

Construction work

At a cost of 11 billion US dollars, a new airport with two extra-long Airbus A380- compatible parallel runways was built on an area of 8.9 square kilometers . The overlong tracks are necessary because temperatures of up to 50 ° C prevail in summer. Higher ambient temperatures reduce the maximum available power from aircraft engines. On these long runways, the aircraft can still take off on long-haul flights fully loaded.

In its first expansion stage from 2014, 29 million passengers can already be handled. In the third expansion stage after 2020, the new airport will then have 80 docking spaces and 11 apron positions that could pass through up to 50 million passengers per year.

use

Realistically, one expects a maximum of 48 million passengers. This indicator also exceeds any individual needs of the small country. Instead, bus boarding is increasingly being used at the remote gates in areas D and E , which is unusual for an international hub . In early 2017, the airport received a 5-star rating from Skytrax . The country's own Qatar Airways is the world's fastest growing international airline. This means that Doha is competing for transit passengers with the Dubai-World Central International Airport, which will then be expanded at the same time, and the Emirates airline . The airlines Etihad from Abu Dhabi , as well as, to a lesser extent, Oman Air from Oman and Kuwait Airways from Kuwait , also rely on this business model of an international hub in the Arab region .

Destinations in the German-speaking area are Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva, Vienna and Zurich.

particularities

The airport was planned by the architects Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum . Like the Hong Kong International Airport planned by the same company , it has a Y-shaped airport terminal between two parallel runways. The airport is laid out on an artificially extended peninsula and is approached from both sides over the sea, which reduces the noise pollution for the city of Doha.

When taking off in the north or landing from the north, you have a good view of the container port and the skyline of Doha.

The new airport can also be reached by sea. An approximately 1.2 kilometer long harbor lagoon is intended for smaller ferries, taxis and private boats; there are only short distances from the landing stage to the terminal.
