N. Scott Momaday (born February 27, 1934 in Lawton , Oklahoma ) is an indigenous American writer, literary scholar and painter.

"N." stands for "Navarre". Momaday is a son of the writer Natachee Scott Momaday and the painter Al Momaday , who occasionally illustrates his son's publications. He belongs to the Kiowa tribe .

For his first novel House Made of Dawn , he was the first indigenous American ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize in 1969. In the same year he received a call to the University of California at Berkeley , where he lectured on English literature and comparative literature . In 1969 he was also accepted into the Gourd Dance Society of Kiowa and in 1976 published the volume of poetry The Gourd Dancer on this experience . As a literature professor, who teaches in particular on Indian literature, Momaday went to Stanford University in 1973 , to the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1982 and gave guest lectures at Lomonosov University in Moscow (1974), Princeton University , Columbia University and in Europe, e.g. B. at the University of Regensburg . In 1992 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Since 1974 Momaday has also worked as a painter and draftsman. He has had many exhibitions in the USA and now illustrates his books himself.

Momaday is considered to be one of the most prominent representatives of modern indigenous culture, who likes to combine deep insights into the problems and spirituality of indigenous peoples with scientific reflection. In 2018 he received an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for his life's work .

He lives in Jemez Springs and Santa Fe with his wife, Barbara Momaday.
