The Navigator is one of the largest factory ships in the world. The trawler is currently owned by the Icelandic Span-Ice ehf and sails under the flag of Belize with its home port in Belize City .

history

The hull of the ship was built in 1996 under hull number 113 on the Tangen-Verft in Norway. The keel was laid on December 1, 1995, the launch on March 16, 1996. The ship was fitted out under hull number 171 at the Langsten Slip & Båtbyggeri shipyard. It was completed on October 26, 1996.

The ship was commissioned as the American Monarch . At that time it was considered the most advanced factory ship in the world. The ship was 96 meters long and had a crew of 200 (two shifts of 100 men). The trawler is able to catch 1,200 tons of fish a day and was criticized by environmentalists early on.

The Atlantic Navigator was first used in the 2003/04 fishing season in the CCAMLR area under the Vanuatu flag . The factory ship became the subject of controversy due to the extremely high catches and the lack of control by CCAMLR's candidate country Vanuatu. The ship was also able to use trawls in medium water depths for a month without interruption, which is why large amounts of bycatch could not be ruled out. Protection against seal bycatch was available, however. After the 2004/05 season, the Atlantic Navigator was withdrawn.

In 2005 the ship came to the Faroe Islands , where it replaced the factory trawler Næraberg . The shipping company of the flagship of the Faroese fishing fleet was Næraberg P / F, in which Aker owned 33%.

On February 19, 2007, the Atlantic Navigator hit the headlines when she ran aground off Kunoy in the north of the Faroe Islands, but only damaged the outer hull and the ship was afloat again after a week.

On March 20, 2007 it was reported that the Atlantic Navigator would only sail under the Faroese flag until August 1. 200 jobs are affected.

Thereupon the ship was sold by the owner, Aker BioMarine ASA, to the subsidiary Aker BioMarine Antarctic AS in order to catch krill in Antarctic waters after a conversion . In December 2008, the parent company Aker ASA bought the Atlantic Navigator for 550 million Norwegian kroner . The renovation was carried out for 340 million Norwegian kroner by January 2009 at the Viktor Lenac Shipyard in Rijeka . The trawler was lengthened by 25 meters, an on-board research laboratory was set up and a heating system was integrated to improve the processing of krill. The trawler was then renamed Antarctic Navigator . From 2011 onwards, the Antarctic Navigator became increasingly unprofitable and therefore decommissioned due to the use of another fishing vessel, which had previously been received by a competitor.

In June 2016 the Antarctic Navigator was finally sold to the Icelandic Span-Ice ehf. In the same year, another renovation took place at the Viktor Lenac shipyard in order to be able to process mackerel . The Navigator's area of operation includes the Atlantic and especially the West African coastal waters.

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by two Wärtsilä Wichmann - diesel driven type 12V28B with 7,059 kW of power. The motors act on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster. Two shaft generators driven by the main engines and one generator driven by a Wärtsilä diesel engine are available to generate electricity on board . The emergency power supply is ensured by a Caterpillar diesel generator.

The ship is equipped, among other things, with two insulated holds with a volume of 1,100 and 2,400 m³ for the transport of frozen fish and a further, non-insulated hold with a volume of 1,800 m³.
