The Neapolitan leek ( Allium neapolitanum ) is a species of the genus leek ( Allium ).
features
The Neapolitan leek is a bald, herbaceous plant . This geophyte forms onions as a persistence organ. The almost spherical onion has a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters and is surrounded by a membranous, non-pitted shell (tunic). The two to three basal, simple, parallel- veined leaves are broad, linear, keeled on the underside, 8 to 35 centimeters long and 5 to 20 millimeters wide. The leaf margin is finely indented.
The triangular, with two sharp and one blunt edge, inflorescence stem reaches heights of growth of 20 to 50 centimeters and is covered in the lower eighth to fourth by the leaves. The initially nodding, hemispherical or spherical, dold-like inflorescence has a diameter of 5 to 8 cm, consists of many flowers, does not form bulbils and has two 7 to 12 mm long, bluntly elliptical bracts at the base , the outer slightly wider than the inner . The flower stalk is 1.5 to 3.5 inches long. The hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical flower is threefold and cup-shaped to flat. The six identical, glossy, elliptical, blunt bracts are white, 7 to 12 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters wide. The six stamens are shorter than the bracts.
The flowering period extends from March to June.
The capsule fruit is 5 millimeters long and is enveloped by the bloom cladding sheets.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, 21, 28, 32, 35, 40 or 42.
Occurrence
The Neapolitan leek occurs in the Mediterranean region , on Madeira and on Tenerife in maquis , on cultivated land. It often settles in shady locations.
