Nelson luck

Nelson Glueck (born June 4, 1900 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † February 12, 1971 there ) was an American rabbi and biblical archaeologist .

Life

Nelson Glueck studied at the University of Cincinnati and graduated in 1920 with a bachelor's degreetitle. After completing postgraduate studies at the Hebrew Union College (HUC), he was ordained as a reform Jewish rabbi in 1923 . From 1923 to 1926 he worked at the University of Jena on his doctorate . From 1927 to 1928 he studied in Jerusalem with William Foxwell Albright . While studying in the Holy Land , he became interested in archeology. In 1928 he went back to the United States and in 1929 became a lecturer at the Hebrew Union College. He returned frequently to today's Israel. In 1930 and 1932 he took part in excavations at Tell Beit Mirsim with Albright . From 1938 to 1940 he directed the excavations at Tell el-Kheleifeh . From 1947 to 1971 he was President of the HUC. In the 1950s he researched the Nabataean civilization in Transjordan . In four decades he localized around 1,500 biblical locations. In 1954 he was elected to the American Philosophical Society and in 1966 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
