Nespelem is a small town ( Town ) in Okanogan County in the US state of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Nespelem had 236 residents. The city is on the Colville Indian Reservation . The name Nespelem is derived from the locally used Indian term for "large flat meadow".

Nespelem was officially recognized as a city on April 15, 1935. Nespelem is the site of a historic Nez Percé cemetery . Chief Joseph is among those buried here . Nespelem was founded by the leader of the Yakama , Chief Kamiakin .

2010 Census
According to the 2010 census , there were 236 residents, 75 households and 53 families in Nespelem. The population density was 479.6 per km ². There were 77 housing units at an average density of 156.5 per km².
The population consisted of 10.6% whites , 0.4% Afro-Americans , 80.1% Indians , 0.4% Asians , 1.3% of other "races" and 7.2 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 6.8% of the population.
Of the 75 households, 42.7% had children under the age of 18, 24% were run by married couples living together , 29.3% by single mothers and 17.3% by single fathers; 29.3% were non-families. 17.3% of the households were singles and 6.7% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.15 and the average family size was 3.55.
The median age in the city was 30 years. 29.2% of the population were under 18, 15.7% between 18 and 24, 24.6% between 25 and 44, 21.6% between 45 and 64 and 8.9 65 years or older. Of the population, 52.5% were men and 47.5% women.
Census 2000
As of the 2000 census , Nespelem had 212 residents, 71 households and 48 families. The population density was 430.8 per km ². There were 84 housing units at an average density of 170.7 per km².
The population consisted of 13.68% whites , 82.08% Indians , 0.47% Asians , 0.47% Pacific islanders , 1.42% other "races" and 1 , 89% from two or more “races” . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 3.3% of the population.
Of the 71 households, 35.2% had children under the age of 18, 35.2% were run by married couples living together and 22.5% by single mothers; 31% were non-families. 23.9% of the households were singles and 9.9% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.57.
The median age in the city was 28 years. 32.5% of the population were under 18, 13.2% between 18 and 24, 17.5% between 25 and 44, 29.2% between 45 and 64 and 7.5 65 years or older. There were 105.8 men for every 100 women, and 120 men for every 100 women for over 18-year-olds.
All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 30,000 and that of families was US $ 27,500. Men had a median income of US $ 43,250 versus US $ 27,500 for women. The per capita income was US $ 12,836. About 15.9% of families and 16.9% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 28.3% of those under 18 and 4.8% of those over 65.
