Nieszawa (German Nessau ) is a city in the Kujawien-Pomeranian Voivodeship , in north-central Poland in the powiat Aleksandrowski . Nieszawa has about 2,000 inhabitants.
In 1422, the community briefly had international significance, when the German Knight Order , which had conquered a large empire in East Prussia , Livonia (in today's Latvia ), parts of Estonia and northern Poland since 1226 , according to the Peace of Lake Melno after long negotiations, including Nieszawa had to cede to the Kingdom of Poland. King Casimir IV also granted and confirmed privileges to the Polish aristocracy through the statute of Nieszawa in 1454 .
In the spring of 1945, over a dozen German civilians were murdered by Polish guards in Nieszawa. Since 2004 a memorial with the inscription “We forgive and ask for forgiveness” has been commemorating the deed.
