The Nesthorn is 3822  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Bernese Alps . It is located in the Swiss canton of Valais .

The Nesthorn is considered a hidden beauty, as the striking summit with its mighty northern slopes is only directly visible from a few places in the valley.

Geographical location

The Nesthorn is located in the southern Bernese Alps between the western Lötschental and the eastern valley of the Aletsch Glacier . To the northeast lies the Aletschhorn , its western neighbor is the Bietschhorn . Brig to the south lies in the Rhone Valley.

In the immediate vicinity is the Beich Glacier , which flows into the Oberaletsch Glacier , directly to the north . The Nesthorn slopes down to this glacier with steep walls interspersed with fires. To the west, a rock ridge leads over the Gredetschjoch to the Breithorn ( 3785  m above sea level ). The Gredetsch Glacier is located on the southern flank . The Nesthorn is the northern end of the Gredetschtal, a classic rather narrow ten kilometer long trough valley , which runs exactly south and flows five kilometers west of Brig into the Rhone valley.

Summit routes

In contrast to the Bernese four-thousand-meter peaks further north, the entire Bietschhorn-Nesthorn group is still pretty lonely and untouched.

The relatively frequent normal route to the Nesthorn leads over the west ridge, which was first climbed in 1865 and which can be reached from Gredetschjoch ( 3508  m above sea level ). The Gredetschjoch is either from the Oberaletschhütte ( 2640  m above sea level ) over the Beich glacier through numerous crevasses (difficulty ZS- ) or from the Baltschiederklause ( 2783  m above sea level ) via the Baltschiederlicka ( 3219  m above sea level ) and the Gredetsch Glacier (WS) accessible. On these routes, the Nesthorn is the ideal tour destination for changing huts between the two huts.

Other, sometimes demanding, alpine tours lead over the south ridge (S +) and the northeast ridge (S-).

The Nesthorn North Face, a serious combined venture, is particularly hard hit by fumigation . The Aare granite emerging from the Aar massif on the wall, which has already been two-thirds melted, is of good and solid quality, unlike many other walls.
