Nestor Assogba

Nestor Assogba (born February 21, 1929 in Abomey ; † August 22, 2017 in Bohicon ) was a Beninese clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cotonou .

Life

Nestor Assogba was ordained a priest on December 21, 1957 in Rome after his priestly training at the seminary in Bohicon and theology studies in Rome . He was initially secretary to Louis Parisot , Archbishop of Cotonou in Benin. After working as a teacher at the Collège catholique Père-Aupiais in Cotonou, Benin, he became vicar general of the newly founded diocese of Abomey on April 6, 1963 and of the seminary of St Paul de Djimè .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 10, 1976 Bishop of Parakou , the then largest diocese in the world. The Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Bernardin Gantin , ordained him episcopal on July 25 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Lucien Monsi-Agboka , Bishop of Abomey and Guy-Marie Riobé , Bishop of Orléans . With the elevation of the diocese to the archbishopric on October 16, 1997, he was appointed the first archbishop of Parakou.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Cotonou on October 29, 1999 and accepted his age-related resignation on March 5, 2005.
