Isidore de Souza

Isidore de Souza (born April 4, 1934 in Ouidah , Benin , † March 13, 1999 in Cotonou ) was Archbishop of Cotonou .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy, Isidore de Souza received the sacrament of ordination from the Archbishop of Cotonou, Bernardin Gantin , on July 8, 1962 . Then de Souza continued his studies in Rome . He then taught at the Institut supérieur de culture religieuse in Abidjan .

On July 17, 1981 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Koadjutorerzbischof Cotonou. The President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, ordained him episcopal on December 8th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Abidjan , Bernard Yago , and the Archbishop of Cotonou, Christophe Adimou .

Isidore de Souza became Archbishop of Cotonou on December 27, 1990, succeeding Christophe Adimou, who had retired for reasons of age.

Since 1998, Isidore de Souza has also been President of the Regional Bishops' Conference for French-speaking West Africa.
