The Nestroy Spiele Schwechat is a theater festival that has been taking place annually since 1973 in Rothmühle Castle in Rannersdorf, a district of Schwechat in Lower Austria .

history

The Nestroy Games Schwechat was founded in 1973 by the Nestroy Committee of the City of Schwechat. The initiator was the director of the amateur theater “St. Jakob “, Walter Mock (1927–1985). Peter Gruber , who has been staging and acting as artistic director ever since, was won as director and artistic director . Rothmühle Castle in Rannersdorf was selected as the venue. As early as 1972, the group “St. Jakob ”, which had already created respect for itself through tours abroad ( Germany , Switzerland , Czechoslovakia , Holland etc.), Hofmannsthal's“ Jedermann ”was performed in the castle courtyard before the Nestroy Spiele Schwechat was founded . After their former rehearsal house in the former Schwechat brewery was demolished in the summer of 1980, the play troupe first moved to a temporary facility, an army barracks. When the Schwechat “elite cinema” had to be closed in April 1985, the local council decided to buy the house in 1988, which was rebuilt at great expense over the next three years and opened in 1991 as a small multi-purpose venue. Rehearsals took place in this new Theater Forum Schwechat for several years before a separate rehearsal room was rented on Himbergerstrasse in order to avoid collisions.

The 2020 Nestroy Games have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Goal setting

The “Nestroy Ensemble Schwechat” has committed itself to performing rarely played and unknown pieces by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy . The Nestroy Spiele Schwechat brought 39 of the 84 Nestroy pieces to the stage. He wants to make a joke , Neither the laurel tree nor the beggar's stick and On Ground Floor and First Floor have been performed three times so far. Six plays ( Theatrical Stories , Freedom in Krähwinkel , Pastime , Former Conditions , The Evil Spirit Lumpazivagabundus and Night Walker ) were performed twice. The performances take place four times a week for five weeks from the end of June to the end of July. At the same time, Nestroy researchers have been meeting since 1975 for the International Nestroy Talks .

Cabaret artists and actors, including Josef Hader , Konstantin Wecker and Elfriede Ott , performed as a side event . Since 2006 there has also been a "Nestroy breakfast" on Sundays, semi-staged readings and appearances with texts by Nestroy or authors who are in any way close to him.
