Neturei Karta ( Aramaic נטורי קרתא, dt. "Guardian of the city", that is, Jerusalem ) is an ultra-orthodox Jewish group that was formed in 1938 and vehemently rejects Zionism and the State of Israel for religious reasons and therefore cooperates with anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers .

history

The organization emerged in 1938 as a split from the Agudat Jisra'el organization , when it became less and less anti-Zionist . According to the group, after the return of the Jewish Messiah, a new Israel will arise as "a kingdom" without human intervention and without force of arms, "whose basis will be divine service". Since the Torah forbids ending exile and establishing a state, Neturei Karta also rejected the establishment of Israel in 1948 .

The group has several synagogues around the world (including Tora Ve'Yira - Jerusalem , Tora U'Tefila - London , Tora U'Tefila - New York , Beis Yehudi - Monsey, NY). The parishes of the Neturei Karta follow the customs (Hebrew Minhagim ) of the Gaon of Vilnius , because the origins of these parishes are in the Lithuanian and not in the Hasidic part of ultra-Orthodox Judaism.

Since 2006, when Moishe Aryeh Friedman was a speaker at the Al-Quds-Tags demonstration in Berlin, several Neturei Karta rabbis have appeared at the Al-Quds-Tags demonstration every year and run in the front row.

criticism

The emphatically anti-Zionist position of Neturei Karta leads to strong polarization within the Jewish community: It is rejected by most other ultra-orthodox and orthodox as well as non-orthodox Jews.

In the Arab and Islamic world, however, Neturei Karta has many advocates. The common anti-Zionist position resulted in a collaboration between Neturei Karta and the PLO . According to the Israeli secret services, the analysis of Palestinian documents is said to have shown that Neturei Karta regularly received financial support from the coffers of the PLO controlled by Yasser Arafat and that Rabbi Moshe Hirsch, leading activist of Neturei Karta, was himself a member of the PLO. Neturei Karta also saw Hamas and the Hezbollah militia as comrades-in-arms in the fight against the Jewish state .

In December 2006 Moishe Aryeh Friedman and other leading members of the Neturei Karta took part in a globally controversial Holocaust denial conference in Iran in 2006 in Tehran , organized by the Iranian government .

In response to criticism of their participation, the organization stated:

"We affirmed the reality of the mass murder of Jews during the Second World War."

"We reaffirmed the reality of the mass murder of Jews during World War II."
