history

Neu Lübbenau was founded in the 18th century. The initiative is said to go back to Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia , who, following the example of Lübbenau further south, which does not belong to Prussia , also wanted cucumbers to be grown in Prussia . He is said to have been annoyed about the high costs that had to be paid for cucumbers with which the Prussian troops were fed. After the king's stay in Lübben (Spreewald) , the plans should have become more specific. In 1729 the order was given to settle farmers in the sparsely populated Unterspreewald. Prussia recruited around 40 farmers from Lübbenau and settled them in today's Neu Lübbenau. The place was initially referred to as "Libbenauerei im Schadowschen Busch". From 1751 the village was named Neu Lübbenau in memory of the old homeland.

However, because the soil conditions in Neu Lübbenau were not optimal for cucumbers, the project failed to achieve lasting success in cucumber cultivation. Some of the families later moved back to Lübbenau. The place Neu Lübbenau remained, however. In 1910 there were 632 inhabitants, in 1933 553 and in 1939 still 519 inhabitants.

A royal hunting lodge was built near Neu Lübbenau, which was used for state hunts during the GDR era and is now the seat of the main forestry office. On December 31, 2001, Neu Lübbenau was merged with the communities of Neuendorf am See and Leibsch to form the community of Unterspreewald.

Buildings

The village church in Neu Lübbenau was built in 1939. The roof of the nave is designed as a keel-up boat.
