The new Salgesch – Leuk line of the Swiss Federal Railways in the canton of Valais was opened in 2004 as part of Bahn 2000 and replaced the last single-track section of the Simplon line . The 6,850 meter long route consists of a. from the two Varen and Leuk railway tunnels and the two bridges over the Dala and the Rhone . Construction began in 1999. The 23 km long route cost CHF 239 million.

In the section between Visp and Salgesch , the trains now travel at a speed of 160 km / h.

history

The new line is part of the overall Pfynwald traffic concept . This was necessary because of the planned construction of the A9 motorway through the Pfynwald nature park. The extraordinary value of this nature reserve forced the planners of the SBB, the canton of Valais and the federal government to reorganize the traffic routes through the Pfynwald. This resulted in an overall solution that was gentle on the landscape.

The following projects have been and will be implemented one after the other:

  • Construction of the SBB double lane between Salgesch and Leuk (in operation since 2004).
  • Relocation of the T9 cantonal road to the former SBB line on the right-hand side of the Rhone (in operation since 2007).
  • Mostly underground lines of the A9 motorway on the route of the old cantonal road. The construction of the motorway has been severely delayed. The public plan was planned for mid-2016. The motorway is unlikely to open before 2025.

Buildings

  • Varen tunnel: length 2,799 m
  • Leuk tunnel: length 1,385 m
  • Dala Bridge: length 90 m
  • Rhone Bridge: length 180 m
  • Minimum radius of the Salgesch exit: 1,600 m
  • Maximum gradient: 10 ‰

The excavation of the Varen tunnel was carried out using traditional blasting, after an exploratory tunnel with a diameter of 3.20 m had been created with a tunnel boring machine .
