from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The new Jewish cemetery Bernkastel is a cemetery in the town of Bernkastel-Kues in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .

The Jewish cemetery is located north of the city in the vineyards on Trarbacher Weg, east of the Moselle and south of the Schadbach .

The cemetery was laid out in 1866 and was occupied from 1867 to 1932. On a stone wall with wrought iron fenced gate area about 33 are grave stones from the 19th and 20th centuries preserved.

The following text is written on a board next to the entrance gate:

"Jewish Cemetery. Bernkastel-Kues had its own Jewish community since the Middle Ages. In the middle of the 19th century, up to 35 Jews lived in Bernkastel-Kues. The synagogue was located at 7 Burgstrasse. Jewish burial places were often not allowed to be set up in the vicinity of localities, because sovereign orders forbade this. This Jewish cemetery was established in 1866 after an old cemetery on the edge of the forest was closed due to occupancy. Until the National Socialists came to power in 1933, the Jews here on the Moselle lived largely assimilated. The Jewish community in Bernkastel-Kues was also hard hit by persecution during the National Socialist era. Some Jewish citizens emigrated, others were deported and perished in the concentration camps. The synagogue was also destroyed. Since then, there has been no Jewish community in Bernkastel-Kues. Only the cemetery bears witness to the Jewish fellow citizens who once lived here. "

Old Jewish Cemetery

There are no more gravestones in the old Jewish cemetery in Bernkastel, which was occupied from the 17th century to 1866. Some gravestones from the old cemetery, which is at the level of the Bernkasteler district boundary on the Unter Thanisch street , were placed in the new Jewish cemetery.
