New Forest is a district in the county of Hampshire in England , which is named after the New Forest landscape of the same name . The administrative seat is Lyndhurst .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was the result of the merger of Borough Lymington, the Rural District New Forest and part of the Rural District Ringford and Fordingbridge.

New Forest is one of the most populous districts in England that has not received the status of a unitary authority . Although the parliamentary commission responsible for municipal reform made a corresponding proposal in 1995, the government at the time rejected it.
