Ringwood is a Market Town (market town or minor town) and a larger civil parish with about 14,200 inhabitants in the New Forest district in the county of Hampshire in the south of England on the Avon . The hamlets of Poulner , Hangersley , Hightown , Crow , Kingston and Bisterne belong to the place .

location

Ringwood is about 160 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of London on the western edge of the former royal hunting grounds and today's New Forest National Park . It is located in the middle of an imaginary triangle between the cities of Southampton , Salisbury and Bournemouth . The A31 road runs through the community from Dorchester to Southampton. The A338 road runs from Bournemouth through Ringwood to Salisbury.

history

As early as 961, the place was mentioned as Rimecuda in a document from King Edgar . In the Domesday Book of 1085/1086 the place is mentioned as Rincvede . The rule of Ringwood had rights over the surrounding land around 1100. In 1685 James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth , was arrested here, who laid claim to the English throne and was therefore charged with high treason. In Ringwood, Somerley House is the home of the Earl of Normanton .

The town has held markets since the Middle Ages. There was a cattle market until 1989. Ringwood had breweries since the early 19th century. Today's brewery ( Ringwood Brewery ) has been producing ale in kegs since 1978. Since 2007, this brewery has belonged to the Marston’s group, which was partially taken over by Carlsberg .

In the vicinity of the hamlet of Poulner there is a former area of ​​the Royal Air Force ( Royal Air Force Station Ibsley ), which in the meantime (1951–1955) was used as a Formula 2 race track. Today the area has been converted into an artificial lake.
