As New Music Fridays (English as for "Fridays new music"; German designation:. Friday Music Day is ) is an initiative of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) referred to a " global release day ", a uniform global publication for music to introduce. From July 10, 2015 , according to the IFPI's request, all music publications should take place on Fridays, instead of on different days in each country as before. Participation is voluntary, however, publications can also take place locally and regionally at other times (e.g. in Germany the provision of the individual successive winners of Sing my Song - The Exchange Concert on the day after the episode was broadcast).

Situation before the initiative

Until now, music has been released on different days of the week. In some countries such as the three German-speaking countries or Australia , music has been published on Friday for several years, so that no change had to be made here. In Great Britain and France, for example, Monday was the usual day for music releases, in Canada and the USA Tuesday. This data had often grown in the history of music (e.g. in the USA due to the need to ship new sound carriers in the physical age) and, according to the IFPI, no longer corresponded to the globalization of the music markets in the digital age. Also, music albums and titles were often released on different continents on different days or even several months apart. A negative example of this is the album Emotion by the Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen , which was released in Japan on June 24, 2015 . In North America and Australia, however, the planned release will not take place until August 21, 2015, and in Europe not until September 25, so that potential buyers will have to wait up to three months before they can purchase the album in their country. New Music Friday is intended to avoid this split , but it had no effect on this example.

According to a study by TNS in seven major music consumer countries (including the USA and Sweden), Friday and Saturday are the preferred days for music publishing. According to the IFPI, further research had shown that Friday would be the most eager to buy music and most of the activities on social media . Paul McGowan, CEO of HMV , said that music must be released at the time consumers want it to buy. Since Saturday also falls on the weekend, it was decided to set Friday as the day.

Goals of the initiative

The joint provision of music on the same day worldwide was named as the main goal. According to Francis Moore, the CEO of IFPI , this leads to less anger among consumers because songs and albums may have been available in other countries much earlier than in their own country. This procedure was music piracy promoted because music because of the legal Erwerbbarkeit in a country illegally to the Internet , for example in file sharing - sharing and Sharehoster was identified and accounted for potential buyers in other countries of the stimulus, a publication of this music in own country waiting. In addition, the anticipation for upcoming music releases should be strengthened globally.

Global changes

According to the IFPI, the simultaneous Friday music release is to take place in more than 45 countries, eleven of which did not have to make this change because Friday was already the release day.

Several artists published in the new New Music Friday effective advertising new recordings , including Years & Years , Owl City , Veruca Salt , Taio Cruz and Little Mix .

Due to the changed publication days , the periods for recording the music charts had to be changed in various countries, including Great Britain , France , Spain and the USA . This led to very different solutions, for example the days between the end of the old recording period and July 10th were appended to the previous week or were evaluated as a complete independent chart week or even completely removed from the chart determination in Italy . In some countries this also changed the publication date and / or the validity date of the national music charts.
