New Town or "neetuhčipiriínu" or "Awadihiraash" different in the language native tribes, is a city with the status of City of Mountrail County in the US -amerikanischen State North Dakota . New Town is the largest city and administrative center within the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation .
geography
The capital of the state of Bismarck is located at a distance of around 170 kilometers to the southeast. The distance to the western town of Williston is 80 kilometers. The Lake Sakakawea affected the city in the west. The connecting roads North Dakota Highway 23 and North Dakota Highway 1804 run through the city. The Canadian province of Saskatchewan begins 90 kilometers north .
history
The city was founded in 1953 and formed from the previous cities of Sanish and Van Hook when they threatened to flood due to the construction of a dam on Lake Sakakawea. After it was discovered that the rocks in the geologically significant Bakken Formation below the city contained huge reserves of oil and gas, a fracking boom comparable to the gold rush of bygone days began in the area. Oil and gas can be extracted using the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking). Although this boom brought a certain economic and financial upswing for the region, it also has many negative effects on New Town, as road traffic and crime increased sharply, the quality of life was restricted and the effects on the environment cannot be assessed.
Demographics
In 2011 a population of 1941 people was determined, which means an increase of 42% compared to the year 2000. The average age of residents in 2011 was 30.2 years, well below the North Dakota average, which was 44.8 years. 74% of the population belonged to different Indian tribes at this time. The sharp increase in the population and the low average age indicate that many new jobs have been created in the field of fracking.
