28 January 2011 hijacked Somali pirates around 9am the New York Star 523 nautical miles northwest of the archipelago of Lakshadweep belonging island Kavaratti . The crew fled to a security room, and the shipowner was temporarily out of contact with his ship. The New York Star was en route from Rabigh in Saudi Arabia to Singapore and had naphtha loaded.
Naval forces from Australia , the Netherlands and Russia prevented the hijacking of the chemical tanker in a concerted action. According to the NATO - Operation Ocean Shield 2011 special forces stormed on January 29 frigate of the Dutch Navy De Ruyter the ship and freed the crew. Previously, a maritime patrol from the Australian Navy had kept the hijacked ship and the pirates under control. After the liberation, the New York Star was escorted from the pirate territory by the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov . The crew consisted of 27 people, none of whom were injured.
