Nicholas Henry Bourne, Baron Bourne of Aberystwyth (born January 1, 1952 in Newark ) is a Welsh Conservative Party politician . He was chairman of the Welsh Conservatives and a member of the Welsh National Assembly . In September 2013 he was made a Life Peer .

Education and professional career

Bourne attended King Edward VI School in Chelmsford and studied at Aberystwyth University in Wales and Trinity College in Cambridge . He is a member of the Gray's Inn Bar Association .

Bourne has taught law at various institutions including St Catherine's College , South Bank University , Swansea Law School , where he was also dean , and others. He wrote several books on legal subjects.

Political career

In the British general election in 1983 Bourne was a Conservative candidate for the Chesterfield constituency , as well as in the by-election the following year. In 1997 he ran again in the British general election , this time for the constituency of Worcester .

Bourne opposed the establishment of a Welsh regional parliament and in 1997 led the unsuccessful Just Say No campaign. In the first elections to the new Welsh National Assembly in 1999, he was then elected to represent the Mid and West Wales region. He kept his seat in the National Assembly until 2011.

From 1999 to 2011 Bourne was party leader of the Welsh Conservatives. From 2007 to 2011 he was opposition leader in the Welsh National Assembly.

On September 9, 2013 Bourne was named as Baron Bourne of Aberystwyth , of Aberystwyth in the County of Ceredigion and of Wethersfield in the County of Essex, a Life Peer and thus has a seat in the House of Lords .

Scandals

In September 2008, the Welsh Conservatives published a document personally attacking the First Minister of Wales, Rhodri Morgan . Initially, Bourne distanced himself from the document, which was published without his knowledge. He later had to admit that he himself approved the document for publication.

A little later, Bourne was attacked from within its own ranks. His leadership qualities were called into question and a change in leadership was sought. Before that, Bourne's expense reports had become public, including an iPod and expensive bathroom renovations.
