Nicholas Dikeriehi Orogodo Okoh

Nicholas Dikeriehi Orogodo Okoh (born November 10, 1952 in Owa-Alero, Delta , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian theologian and soldier. He is Archbishop of Bendel , Bishop of Asaba and was elected the fourth Primate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria in September 2009 .

Life

After graduating from primary school in 1964, Okoh worked in an uncle's business for four years. In 1969 he joined the Nigerian army during the Biafra War , where he performed various functions (after his ordination also as a military chaplain ) and was made lieutenant colonel by 1982 , the same rank he held when he left the military in 2001.

During his time in the army, he continued: After higher education degrees in 1974 and 1976 and the attainment of higher education, he then attended 1976-1979 the Immanuel College of Theology in Ibadan and graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1982 the Bachelor of Theology and 1985 Master of Theology .

He was ordained a deacon in 1979 and a priest in 1980. In 1987 he became a canon and in 1991 archdeacon. In 1996 he married. He is now the father of five children.

In 2001 he was elected Bishop of Asaba, the capital of the Nigerian state Delta . In 2005 he was elected Archbishop of the Province of Bendel. In 2009, after several ballots in which no candidate received the required two-thirds majority, he was unanimously elected to succeed Peter Akinola in a secret ballot . He took office in March 2010.

Positions

Okoh accompanied his predecessor Akinola to the Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem in June 2008 and together with him called on the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and the Anglican Church of Canada to repent with regard to their attitude towards homosexuality . Shaped by his military career, the Lagos Guardian expects him to continue the strict conservatism of his predecessor.
