Nico Porteous (born November 23, 2001 in Hamilton ) is a New Zealand freestyle skier . He starts in the disciplines halfpipe , slopestyle and big air .

Career

Porteous has participated in AFP World Tour competitions since 2013 and in FIS competitions since 2015 . In the 2014/15 season he finished second and one in the halfpipe of the Rocky Mountain Series in Copper Mountain and second in the slopestyle in Winter Park . The following season he won the US Revolution Tour in Copper Mountain and the Nor-Am Cup in Calgary each in the halfpipe. After finishing second in the halfpipe at The Cardrona Games and at the same time the Australian New Zealand Cup in Cardrona at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, he started the World Cup in Copper Mountain for the first time in December 2016 , finishing 22nd in the halfpipe. At the 2017 World Championships in Sierra Nevada , he came 12th in the halfpipe.

At the beginning of the following 2017/18 season, Porteous won the halfpipe at the Australian New Zealand Cup in Cardrona, where he achieved his best placement in the World Cup with sixth place in the halfpipe. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the halfpipe with 94.8 points. At the beginning of September 2018 he won the gold medal in the halfpipe at the Junior World Championships in Cardrona. He won bronze at the Winter X Games 2019 in Aspen and finished ninth in the 2019 World Championships in Park City . The following year he was fourth in the Winter X Games .

His older brother Miguel is also active in freestyle skiing.
