Niederwöhr is a district of the municipality of Münchsmünster in the Upper Bavarian district of Pfaffenhofen .

location

St. Martin Church

The place is located west of the community of Münchsmünster and is spatially almost integrated with it. The river Ilm meanders between the village and the community of Münchsmünster in a north-south direction . The wide plains of the Danube valley and their meadows shape the landscape. Regensburg is about 55 kilometers to the east and Ingolstadt 25 kilometers to the west. Munich is about 90 kilometers south of the town.

history

When the political communities were formed in 1808/1818 , the wasteland of Griesham and the villages of Nieder-, Mitter- and Oberwöhr were combined to form an independent municipality of Wöhr. As part of the regional reform , this municipality was incorporated into the Münchsmünster municipality on January 1, 1978. The name Wöhr goes back to the Middle High German "Wert", which means something like island or elevated, water-free land.

Of the three villages with the name Wöhr, the village of Niederwöhr is the oldest. Its origins go back to the 7th century. Oberwöhr only appeared in documents from 1100 and Mitterwöhr from the 13th century. In Niederwöhr there was a residential complex protected by a double wall near the church, which is why the place was also called Burgstall in the first documents. Here, in the early 13th century, the poet “ Reinbot von Turn ” wrote the Middle High German “Georgsroman”, in which he also mentions the nearby women's monastery “Gisifelt” (= Geisenfeld monastery ) in verse 5296 . Wörth , located near Regensburg , also claims to have been the poet's place of work. It can be regarded as largely certain that Niederwöhr was the ancestral seat of the "family of the Münsterers".

church

The Church of St. Martin was built in the 16th century.

structure

The farms have almost disappeared from the place. Residential development predominates.
