Nigel Sitwell

Nigel Degge Wilmot Sitwell (born August 23, 1935 in Gosport , Hampshire ; † 2017 ) was a British conservationist , businessman, editor and author who specialized in wildlife and travel. He traveled to nearly 100 countries and regions around the world, including Antarctica , Tibet , East Africa and East Asia . He was also the editor of the WWF magazine Wildlife for 17 years .

Life

After graduating from Sherborne School in 1953, Sitwell went to Canada, where he worked as a financial journalist for the Montreal Gazette from 1958 to 1961 . In 1964 he became a member of the editorial board of the ailing magazine Animals , which was founded in 1963 as the editorial mouthpiece of the WWF. Sitwell bought the magazine and re-published it as a monthly magazine from January 1967. In May 1974 the title was changed to Wildlife to present a wider range of subjects. Several well-known conservationists could be won as authors, including Peter Jackson , Malcolm Penny , Sir Peter Scott , Sir Guy Mountfort , Nicole Duplaix and Janet Barber . In 1983 the magazine was renamed BBC Wildlife . In 2000, Sitwell launched the new Ocean Explorer project , in which he created richly illustrated maps from various regions of the world, including Antarctica, Svalbard , South Georgia , Alaska , South America , the Falkland Islands , the Caribbean , the Galapagos Islands , the Mediterranean Islands and Greenland , published. These detailed maps are aimed primarily at cruise passengers and contain information about the animal world, landscapes, sights and famous researchers. In cooperation with Lars-Eric Lindblad , Sitwell developed the Antartica Program of the Orient Lines shipping company in 1993 , where he was expedition leader on cruise ships such as the Professor Khromov , the Alla Tarasova , the Ocean Princess and the Marco Polo for fourteen seasons . These cruises not only went to Antarctica, but also to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Ross Sea .

Sitwell traveled extensively in the Galapagos Islands. After his first visit in 1967, he made another 50 visits to the islands. In 1995 he was one of the founding trustees of the Galapagos Conservation Trust and served as its chairman from 1997 to 2006.

As a member of WWF, Sitwell served as information director for the UK section. He was also a board member of the Zoological Society of London and a trustee of Survival International , where he ran the charity foundation from 1996 to 1997. For his services to nature conservation, he was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands .

Sitwell was a member of the United Kingdom Independence Party . In 2005, 2009 and 2013 he stood for the district of Chichester- South in the city council elections in West Sussex .
