Niko Meinhold

Nikolai "Niko" Meinhold (born May 11, 1975 in Hanover ) is a German jazz and improvisation musician (piano, composition).

Live and act

Meinhold received classical piano lessons from the age of seven. From 1997 to 2003 he studied popular music (piano and composition) at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin , then jazz piano and composition at the Kungligan Musikhögskolan Stockholm ; he completed his master's degree in 2009 at the Berlin Jazz Institute . His teachers included Aki Takase , Steve Gray, David Friedman , Jiggs Whigham , Örjan Fahlström , Sten Sandel, Ove Lundin, Dietrich Eichmann and Georg Graewe .

Meinhold formed the band Tritorn in 1999 with the singer Anke Jochmaring and the bassist Sven Hinse , with whom he released two albums; Zeger Vandenbussche, Yelena K. and Michael Griener belong to his quartet . He also played in various ensembles; Cymin Samawatie and Ketan Bhatti brought him to their Divan of the Continents ( JazzFest Berlin 2015). He wrote music for various formations and for theater; In the 2016/2017 season, Meinhold created the music for “Yellow Line” at the Schauspielhaus Graz . With Ulrich Noethen he wrote the audio book Die Wilden Schwäne (Megaeinsverlag 2005).

Prizes and awards

In 2001 Meinhold won the German University Competition for Ensembles and the Karl Hofer Jazz Performance Prize with the Trio Tritorn . He received the jazz solo scholarship from the Berlin Senate and a touring scholarship from the Nordiska Kulturfond for his Scandinavian band Northern Alliance .
