Nikola Vulic

Nikola Vulić (* November 15 . Jul / 27. November  1872 greg. In Shkodra ; † 25. May 1945 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian historian .

Vulić studied at the University of Belgrade and at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1896. phil. received his doctorate . He then returned to Belgrade, where he first taught at the grammar school and from 1897 at the university. In 1901 he was appointed professor of antiquity. In 1921 he was elected a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences . From 1922 to 1931 he was President of the Serbian Archaeological Society. In 1938 he retired. During the Second World War he was imprisoned in the Banjica concentration camp .

During his teaching and research activities in Belgrade, Vulić founded an important ancient science school with international reach. He himself wrote over 550 publications in Serbian, French, Latin and German on the ancient history of the Balkan Peninsula , epigraphy and the history of language. He also took part in excavation campaigns in Kosmaj (1911-1912), in Trebeništa on Lake Ohrid (1930-1933) and Skopje . Vulić attached great importance to the quality of the scientific methodology and particularly opposed national romantic transfiguration. He also expressed himself in the dispute over the name Macedonia in favor of naming the region as "Serbia".

As an ancient scholar, Vulić was internationally recognized. He was a member of several learned societies abroad (the Romanian Academy , the Bulgarian Archaeological Society, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian Archaeological Institute , the German Archaeological Institute , the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres , the Accademia Vergiliana and the Greek Society to Constantinople) and honorary doctorate from the universities of Clermont-Ferrand and Padua .

A bronze bust of Vulić, created by Sreten Stojanović (1944), is in the Serbian National Museum in Belgrade.
