Nikolaus Staudacher (born December 7, 1660 in Pfarrkirchen , Lower Bavaria , † February 25, 1736 in Mannheim ) was a Jesuit priest , confessor and advisor to the Palatinate Electress Elisabeth Amalia and her son, Elector Karl III. Philipp ; Rector of the Jesuit College Mannheim and Superior of the Upper German Order Province.
Live and act
Nikolaus Staudacher came from parish churches in Lower Bavaria and entered the novitiate of the Jesuits in Landsberg am Lech on September 28, 1677 . After completing his studies, he worked as a professor at the University of Innsbruck from 1694 and taught philosophy and mathematics for several years.
When the confessor and personal pastor of the widowed Palatinate Electress Elisabeth Amalia died in 1701, Nikolaus Staudacher was appointed as successor to this office at the Palatinate-Neuburg court . She died in 1709 and Staudacher worked from 1709 to 1713 as rector of the Jesuit college in Neuburg an der Donau . In that year, Count Palatine Karl Philipp , who resided as imperial governor at Innsbruck , also appointed him confessor.
After the death of his older brother, Elector Johann Wilhelm, in 1716, Karl Philipp succeeded him as Elector of the Palatinate and Duke of Palatinate-Neuburg , Jülich and Berg . In 1718 he settled in Heidelberg , with him the Jesuits Georg Löffler, Franz Xaver Pfister and his confessor Nikolaus Staudacher. Here in Heidelberg, the elector's daughter Elisabeth Auguste Sofie von der Pfalz (1693–1728) also chose him as her soul guide and confessor.
In 1720 the Electoral Palatinate Court was moved from Heidelberg to Mannheim and three Jesuits followed the Elector there. They were Father Nikolaus Staudacher as confessor, Father Franz Pfiffer as court chaplain and Father Joseph Lofferer. The people's missionary and writer Father Matthäus Vogel soon joined them. First, the Jesuits settled next to the elector's house. Father Staudacher introduced the elector to the idea of founding a college, whereupon he gave them a free building site for the church and college on May 26, 1727. The latter was completed in 1734, in 1737 a new high school was built, and in 1738 construction of the Jesuit church began. The college was structurally connected to the new electoral palace . It no longer exists today, but the Jesuit church that belongs to it does .
Staudacher worked as confessor and advisor to the elector in Mannheim until his death. He was superior of the local Jesuit mission from 1723, in 1735 he became rector of the college, and he also functioned as superior of the Upper German order province. At times he is said to have contributed to the education of the heir to the throne and later Elector Karl Theodor . After Staudacher's death, Father Franz Seedorf , the main educator of Karl Theodor, became his successor as confessor of Elector Karl III. Philip.
Father Nikolaus Staudacher was buried in the crypt of the Jesuit Church in Mannheim, where he later received an epitaph.
Staudacher wrote funeral sermons on the death of Electress Elisabeth Amalia (1709) and Elector Johann Wilhelm (1716).
