Nobu Su ( Chinese  蘇信吉  /  苏信吉 , Pinyin Sū Xìnjí , W.-G. Su Hsin-Chi ) is CEO and owner of the Taiwanese shipping company Today Makes Tomorrow, or TMT for short, in Taipei , Taiwan .

family

Su comes from a Chinese family in Keelung , Taiwan. He is the son of Su Ching Wun A ; 1926–2002, who had an education in Japan at Okayama High School and in July 1956 founded the shipping company Taiwan Marine Transport Corporation (TMT). Su has a Japanese mother and grew up in Japan from an early age , which is why he got the Japanese first name Nobu - pronunciation in standard Chinese from Pinyin- transcription Xinji or Hsin-Chi from Wade-Giles . Su's wife is Japanese.

education

Su graduated with a BSc in Economics from Keio University in Tokyo and earned an MBA from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in 1982.

Entrepreneurial activities

With “OceanNet”, Su released a system that enables the transmission and reception of data via an offshore cellular network. OceanNet was originally developed as an inexpensive ship-to-shore communications network so that ship's crews can contact their families, but it is also used in ship-to-ship communications for safety.

In 2002, Su registered the first of three successful patents for OceanNet. The patents were registered in the United Kingdom (2002), the United States (2004) and Korea (2009).

Advances in cloud computing have made OceanNet more effective via the AIS system currently used by the shipping industry.

Su also developed a lower deck pipeline structure for ships, which he patented in Japan , Korea and China and which he made available to shipping companies for use without a license . Sus's below deck piping system for ships is currently in commercial use.

Su registered a patent on a technology called Timestamp that seeks to eliminate email fraud with a unique time signature for users.

In 2002, Su merged his own company with his father's shipping company, Taiwan Marine Transport Corporation (TMT), after his father's death. In 2007 he renamed the company ( rebranded ) by Today Makes Tomorrow (TMT). Before the “rebranding” the company was once called “Xinrong” B in Chinese

TMT has interests in transactions of forward freight agreement (FFA) on the world market.

In April 2011 Su received the Lifetime Achievement for Entrepreneurship Award at the international ShipTek conference.

Shipping industry

As chairman of TMT, Nobu Su increased ownership of ships across multiple shipping classes. The company now operates over 20 vans including LNG tankers, VLCC vans, cement vans and vehicle vans.

Mr. Su made TMT a leading operator of real-world tankers and bulk carriers. Under his leadership, TMT expanded its fleet to include bulk carriers, very large crude carriers, load carriers, liquefied gas tankers, automobile transporters and cement carriers. In addition to increasing the service capabilities of TMT and customers like Chevron , Nobu Su transformed TMT into a global leader in international shipping. Under his leadership, TMT emerged as one of the most successful participants in the global freight derivatives market (FFA market). Su was referred to as "Mr Controversy" in the FFA market. Recent ship purchases have included Capesize bulk carriers and investments in oil tankers. TMT has a number of business partners and charters from companies such as Chevron and COA for crude oil and cement transportation.

Legal issues

In June 2013, Su filed for USA Chapter 11 bankruptcy after being pressured by Taiwanese creditors , then appealed a $ 47 million judgment in 2015 after a long litigation against Lakatamia .

Su was found guilty on 15 of 17 counts by a London court in March 2019 and received a 21-month sentence in the well-known Pentonville prison with its well-known inmates such as Oscar Wilde and Boy George .

Su may move early from the closed prison system to the open system in April 2020, but will not be allowed to leave the UK during this period .

Engagement in Asia

Nobu Su lives in Taiwan and sees the country as an important part of the global shipping industry. He is committed to increasing the inventory, visibility and reach of Asian companies within the shipping markets. Through TMT, he invested in a number of regional shipping lines and shipbuilding companies.

Su sees his corporate activities as an opportunity to promote Asian corporate governance, participation and integration in the global economy and has also worked on research on how Asian companies and executives can use creative methods to be more integrated into the global economy .

Su said that he plans to expand the reach of Asian companies into other investments and markets, with plans to invest in a liquefaction company in São Tomé and Príncipe to produce natural gas .

philanthropy

Su endowed a chair at IMD that focuses on research into how "Asian companies and executives can use creative methods to be more integrated in the global economy". The chair is titled “Nobu Su Professor of Global Leadership” and Professor Katherine Xin is the first to hold the chair .
